I've been in Thailand for about five weeks.Following a long series of hellish bus rides (including a six-hour stretch in the back of a pickup truck with a dozen other people), today I find myself in the ancient capital of Sukhothai.
I was here once before, about two-and-a-half years ago. At that time it was low season and I practically had the ruins all to myself. This time they were overrun with tourists. Even still, it was good to be back, amid these glorious temples of the ancient past.
For an hour I sat at the feet of the Buddha pictured above, meditating, contemplating, just taking in the moment of being there.
Tomorrow I head to the monkey capital of Lopburi, and after that to the deep south, where the island paradise awaits.
